Win ZAP Grand Tasting Tix!

Who likes Zin? Who likes ZAP? (You know… the must-attend 4-day Zinfandel Festival.) Who wants two free tickets to the ZAP Grand Zinfandel Tasting on January 28?

Well here’s your chance. Just tell BungRCooper.com your wildest Zin story, and you’ll have a chance to win two tickets to the ZAP tasting…courtesy of Zinfandel Advocates & Producers.

It could be what you did WITH Zin…like your most delicious Zin-based recipe.

It could be what you did FOR Zin…like how you groveled for that extra-long pour.

Or, it could be what you did ON Zin…the more embarassing the situation, the better, IMHO.

Just keep it to 100 words or less. Put it in the comment section of this Blog post. To comment, you’ll need to give your name (which will be published) and your e-mail address (which won’t be, but we have to contact the winner somehow).

Be sure to mention the producer and the year of the Zin involved (if you still have the brain cells to remember it). Does it have to be a true story? Well, yes, but how is Bung gonna fact-check anyway? And, to paraphrase Dragnet, change the names ‘to protect the innocent.’

Entries must be posted no later than December 31, 2011. Bung, himself, will pick the best Zin-fession, based on totally capricious criteria. In other words,  The folks at ZAP will be in touch with the winner in early January. All the details about the ZAP Festival are at www.zinfandel.org.

Bung R. Cooper says go, therefore, and Zin some more!

While vacationing in Calif we did a “custom” camping at Yosemite. Evergreen Lodge sets up tent, etc prior to your arrival. Went in for dinner and had a great bottle of Sobon Estates Zin 2006. Bought two more to drink by campfire with our smores. As we were marveling about our wonderful wine found I realized my feet were quite warm. Thinking that good Zin just warms you all over, I finally realized my tennis shoes were a bit too close to the fire ring and the soles were rather hot! Gives new meaning to the term “smoke” in wine and its a great party story!

I made my own version of wassail for the holidays using: 2 bottles of 2009 Gnarly Head Old Vine Zinfandel, 1 bottle of Martinelli’s Sparkling Apple Cranberry Cider, 2 bottles of Lagunitas IPA, 1 cup of St. George Spirits Botanivore gin, mulling spices, 3 halved Clementines and 2 halved lemons. I allowed it to simmer for 6 hours then proceeded to drink half of it one day and half of it the next. It was great!

  • A memorable Zinfandel… Wilson Winery was our Zinfandel “first true love”. Besides being a great Dry Creek Valley wine Wilson’s Carl’s Vineyard Zinfandel has always been a family favorite in part because my wife’s dear father, who passed in 1997 was also named Carl. When our daughter and son-in-law welcomed their first child Isabella into world in July of 2009, we had a quiet family celebration in the hospital in Austin with a bottle of 2006 Carl’s Zinfandel and a toast to Isabella and Carl.

Growing up in Hayward, I didn’t know what Zinfandel (or any type of wine) was. One day, some of my parent’s friends came back from a trip to the city and raved about how they loved Zinfandel. I thought they were talking about some kind of magic show like “Siegfried and Roy”!.

Now I live in tony Pacific Heights and I love Zinfandel. I thought about that same story at a Fleet Week party a few years back while I was savoring a pouring of R&B Cellars 2009 Zydeco Zinfandel from a glass.
